You’re a bad influence.

There are 8 budgets Wyrd manages. I look after 4 of them. Transportation, technology, relocation, & Varco Lake maintanance. The other 4 budgets are looked after by a Wyrd Exec Council member, & there all password protected.

Here’s what I found.

I pulled a report on transpo costs. I already knew that in 2009 we had expensed >4x what we normally do for fuel and maintanance. We also bought 8 new trucks & spent $45k+ retrofitting them. I’m guessing those are used to bring all these people to this quarantine. Line by line, it's all penny ante stuff until you add it up and see almost half a million bucks suddenly gone. In 2010 and 2011, same huge expense. Fewer new trucks though.

But I cant find anything to say where people were going. All the transpo logs are password protected. I was able to get in to them a couple of months ago. I don’t know if it’s because of Ishmael’s 90-day password expiry policy or what. But it’s weird that I cant get in now.

Anyhow, figured I could claim that there was a huge discrepancy between car parts actual and car parts budgeted, and use it as an excuse to dig for clues as to where people were taking these vehicles. Maybe get a fix on your quarantine. Hell, if you get “promoted” unexpectedly, at least I’ll know where to look for you.

So I asked my boss if I could get someone on Varco Lake to do an audit of all the car parts we have left. Based on what I was seeing, we were ordering six times as many car parts as we were using in repairs, so it looked like someone was teefing those parts. Boss said he’d call up Varco Lake and see what we could do. So he does. Gets in touch with Burley.

Burley told us she didn’t have anybody to spare at Varco Lake. Boss told her it was important because I thought one of the new were’s was stealing parts and selling them at Varco Valley Station to make a quick buck. Then I asked her if she could make a special allowance for me to drive up from Winnipeg to Varco Lake to do the audit myself…and she said yes.

So I go up there and I take an inventory. I’m up in the store room for like three hours taking a count and looking for any information I can find, like travel logs or maps with highlighted roads or something.

Right around four this afternoon, I start to hear voices downstairs in the repair bay, so I kinda stick my head out of the door, and what do I see but Bridget herself??? And who’s she talking to? Of all the people in the world? Gil Burton!!!

You remember Gil? I heard it’s because of Ishmael that Gil’s stuck at Varco Lake. Gil’s not doing well these days. He’s lost a lot of weight.

Anyhow, I can’t hear much, but I do keep hearing Bridget say the same thing over and over again: “But I don’t know what he’s done. We can take him to the Farm until we find out.”

So now I think what is this Farm???

I started to wonder if that’s the code name for the quarantine.

And that got me wondering…why do have a code name for a quarantine??? Why are we keeping it a secret??? And from who??

So maybe you are onto something, I don’t know. Maybe they don’t want to mention the quarantine so us human plebes don’t get scared that we’ll end up there ourselves.

Damn. I wonder if Sprucey knew about the quarantine before they took him in.

Give me a few days to find out more about the Farm.

Just be careful. If quarantine is being kept secret, it’s being kept a secret for a reason.

Interesting.
And baby makes two.
You didn’t answer my question.
I never answer a thorny question until I’ve given it due thought.
And due thought requires time, patience, a vast intellect, and extraordinary powers of recall.
But do remind me: to which question have I not yet replied?
Do we engage?
If they dig too deeply, they’ll hit something hotter than bedrock.
They already know too much, Jewell.
This can only end badly.
We need to put an end to it. Now. Before it gets out of hand.

Jewell is typing…

OMG, Sumac. Yes, I covered my tracks. I think I know a thing or two about electronic surveillance. I’ve been taught by the best.

But that’s not the point! People are missing, Sumac, and we’re making them disappear. Us. We’re abducting human beings. That’s so totally not in the Wyrd Charter.

Most of these people aren’t even infected, and we’re just throwing them into quarantine in the middle of nowhere to fend for themselves among brand new werewolves. Not just one or two werewolves either, but close to like fifty or sixty, and we’re sending them there to die.

So ask me if I care if I get caught.

we wouldnt set up a qurantine if we didnt need one! coz we can barely afford it in teh budget right now.

listen. we have so many existing werewolves all needing new ids and relocation all at the same time right now, and none of them have jobs until we get them resettled. so we arent getting as much revenue as we used to. even ishmael isnt contributing half as much as he used to.

so we cant afford anything that we dont absolutely need!

we had eight new weres in brazil alone last year!!! maybe we have a serial biter on the lose thats causing a new epademic here in canada.

you know how this works. symptoms don’t show for months but in the meentaime victims are already infectous. they go back home to there wives and girlfriends and infect them, and if they break up and meet smbdy nnew…etc etc etc!!!!

we wouldnt make people disappear without a damn good reason coz it costs to much to cover up there tracks. i dont like it anymore than you do but its a neccessary evil.

leave it alone. you should know better than to pry into the exec counsil archives!!!!

god i hate typing on this thing. call me.

Necessary evil, huh?

Right. Okay. So you know my partner Magnolia? I’d been told she was promoted to lycanthrope three years ago and redeployed in Africa someplace?

Yeah. Half-true.

Just found a kill/capture/quarantine report for her too, with a follow-up from this “Dr. Foster” character who keeps popping up in all these reports. Turns out that the same day Magnolia was tossed into quarantine, she got torn to shreds by this ginormous lycanthrope named Vengeance, and was left for dead. And now she’s in quarantine for good, because it was a successful infection.

And you know Juniper? Been one of the longest surviving human field agents since Hector Two-Trees Sr.? That Asian girl who played Back in Black on the ukulele at the Christmas party in 2010?

Quarantined in March of 2011. Confirmed dead two days later.

Yeah, and your bff Spruce Banner? You said he got into trouble with Jay, and was redeployed to a station in England? Uh huh. Right. Quarantined back in 2009. And now dead. He lasted two weeks because someone took pity on him and tried to protect him. Then Vengeance found him and that was the end of that.

So, wow...necessary evil, huh?

Oh, and Dogwood? Quarantined, and dead not five minutes after they let him off the truck.

That’s how they’ve been retiring us, Sumac. They keep saying that they’ll promote us to lycanthrope, and that we’ll come back to Wyrd looking nothing like what we did when we were fully human. Then they bring in a new lycanthrope that we’re supposed to believe was one of us. If the plants don’t remember us or details of their past, we all get to blame first-transformation amnesia.

This is the BS they’ve been feeding us from the moment we’re sworn in.

But really? They’ve literally been throwing us to the wolves.

You sure you want me to stop digging?

Found one.

Wyndham Kill/Capture/Quarantine Report

Date of capture: February 29, 2012

Metrics at time of kill/capture/quarantine
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 160 lbs
Age: 45
Sex: cis-female
Location of capture: Staging Area, see notes
Occupation: Wyrd Agent, human
Infection status: suspected / carrier

Wyrd Agent(s) Assigned
Primary: Bridget Carnegie
Secondary: (n/a)
Status: Agent forcibly retired. Interned in quarantine.

Suspected Vector(s):

1) Helen (Last name unknown)
2) (enter name)
3) (enter name)

Capture notes:

Agent Cypress had opted for a six month rotation at the staging area in order to fast track promotion to lycanthrope. Agent had been on duty there for five weeks and was adjusting poorly to winter conditions. Agent had been treated multiple times for dehydration and other medical problems but stayed on duty, knowing she could not return to Wyrd nor to civilian status until after her rotation and promotion to lycanthrope, as her death had already been faked and a public funeral service held. She also stated a dedication to duty, and refused Wyrd headquarter desk jobs. Injuries from field ops missions in 2011 (car accident en route to a stake out) have also prevented her from pursuing further field work. On several occasions, I had requested that Cypress be granted a leave to Varco Lake to recover properly, as injuries, chronic pain and prolonged insomnia were beginning to cloud her judgement. These requests were repeatedly declined by acting field ops coordinator Angie Burly.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on February 29th, the staging area camp received an alert that a quarantine inmate had begun to cross the bridge toward the mainland. At this time, contrary to standing orders, no agent – human nor lycanthrope – fired their weapons. I was officer in charge at the time, so I came to find out why no one was shooting.

To be fair, I can’t entirely blame the agents for not firing on command. I sympathize but I do not and did not approve. At time of capture nearly four years ago, Helen was only six or seven years old. After four years of malnutrition and extremely harsh living conditions, she is undersized for her current age of approximately 11. Upon seeing the child on the bridge, crying as she was, even I was reluctant to enforce the shoot-on-sight order. However, in that moment I decided that enough was enough, and that the child was better off dead rather than have to spend another day in quarantine.

I had drawn my weapon when Agent Cypress stood between me and the target, and she refused to move, even on pain of death. She reminded me that while child victims of AATS do not express symptoms until puberty, they do not have the physical equipment (claws, teeth, etc.) to infect anyone. I reminded her that child victims of AATS hit puberty eventually. I also reminded her that Helen would never be able to live a normal life elsewhere, particularly because of her fugitive months and this prolonged period of confinement during her formative years. She has been in effect raised by wolves, and will never be able to adapt to human civilization.

In direct violation of orders, Cypress then proceeded to cross the bridge toward the child. I frequently warned her that I would shoot if she returned to the staging area. Cypress then knelt in front of the child and spoke to her at length. After approximately seventeen minutes, Helen returned to quarantine, and Cypress remained on the bridge.

Cypress then turned toward the mainland camp. I issued escalating warnings and reminded her that she was now considered a carrier of AATS, had invalidated her fast track to promotion, and that she was endangering all other humans in the camp with cross-contamination. I observed that Cypress was weeping openly and may not have heard the initial warnings, so I fired a warning shot. Cypress stopped her advance toward camp, asked me if I would show compassion and let her return, and I replied that I had to show compassion for the other human members of the camp by preventing her return. She continued toward camp, at which point I shot her. No other shots were fired by myself or anyone else in camp. In my own distress, I made a bad shot. Injured, she turned instead toward quarantine, presumably to seek medical aid from Dr. Foster.

I hereby submit this report and await judgment from the Wyrd Council regarding my failure to act in a more aggressive manner. I have left the mainland camp under Uriah’s command in my absence.

None.

Hey.

So, you were right. Ishmael did have a backup server, but I don't think he set that script to archive everything on the main servers. The code was effective but messy, that's why it took so long to break in. If Ishmael had designed it, I wouldn't have been able to get in at all. He would have embedded some malware to rickroll me before setting my laptop on fire.

And I was right, too. I think I know why things are starting to fall apart at Wyrd.

Did you know about the quarantine?

It looks like Bridget knew about the quarantine all along, too. I mean, I knew she was busy, but jeez - I had no idea what she was up to.

Check this out. Here's just one of her reports I found. Under other circumstances, I'd get a giggle out of how excited Bridget sounds at the end of the report. But then I count the number of reports she and others have submitted. There are hundreds of them in here! Hundreds, Sumac. And every one of them represents the answer to another missing person's case.

Call me, all right? I can't shake this feeling that somebody's watching me.

~Never Give Up...Never Surrender.~
Wyndham Kill/Capture/Quarantine Report
Preliminary Information
Case file: ABV-0
Name: Andre Boucher-Veneur
AKA: Dep
Added to k/c/q list: January 6, 2011
Date of capture: February 22, 2011

Metrics at time of kill/capture/quarantine
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 75 lbs
Age: 20
Sex: cis-male
Location of capture: Lachine, QC.
Occupation: homeless / unemployed
Infection status: suspected / carrier

Wyrd Agent(s) Assigned
Primary: Bridget Carnegie, Hector Two-Trees
Secondary: Uriah Griffonshire
Status: Successful capture. Interned in quarantine.

Suspected Vector(s):

1) John Geary-Graves, great-uncle, by way of his spouse Silvyan de Boncoeur (confirmed patient of Dr. Grey),
2) Roch “Hawk” Boucher-Veneur (brother, confirmed patient of Dr. Grey),
3) Vengeance (confirmed patient of Dr. Grey)

Capture notes:

Target ABV has been indigent since August 2010, following an assault charge laid by his father. Charges were laid after an altercation at Montreal Jewish Hospital where the target’s brother, Roch, had been a patient for several months, being treated for complications with cystic fibrosis. ABV accused his father of accepting bribes to allow Roch to undergo human experimentation. After father accused ABV of cowardice and questioning his authority, blows were exchanged. Father was admitted to same hospital with multiple contusions, two fractured ribs, a laceration from a broken bed rail, and a broken nose. ABV himself was treated for a black eye and released into police custody. Released on bail, and has been on the run ever since. (See quarantine report 2011_01_02-D, as father was also brought to quarantine).

In February, Wyrd Intelligence intercepted email communications between ABV and his great-uncle requesting pick-up at a coffee shop in Lachine, Quebec, as ABV wished to turn himself in and reconcile with the family in order to visit his brother Roch. Both Roch and Great-Uncle John had already been captured (see reports 2011_01_19-C and 2011_02_01-A).

Two-Trees and I posed as plainclothes officers and presented falsified RCMP identification. We explained that the wealthy John Geary-Graves had been abducted in the night and that we expected ransom demands. Asked ABV to come with us to the station. Once ABV was in the vehicle, Hector Two-Trees administered Etorphine by dart gun, and I secured ABV in the transport vehicle. ABV was then transported to the Wyndham staging area without incident. I left Two-Trees at the staging area, and proceeded to quarantine proper with Uriah.

Upon arrival, I believed that ABV was still under the influence of Etorphine, but as soon as I unlocked the manacles, ABV attacked, breaking my nose and cracking one rib. ABV then escaped the transport vehicle and ran from the hotel on foot. Uriah and I pursued, but ABV was surprisingly fast on his feet, even overland and in dense brush.

Just as we caught up to him, ABV ran headfirst into Vengeance, the biggest MF werewolf on the island, and that SOB punched Vengeance right in the crotch, quickly stunning (angering) the lycanthrope. When Vengeance attempted to bite ABV’s face off, ABV punched Vengeance in the nose. ABV tried again to escape, but Vengeance caught him by the throat and threw him half-way back to the hotel. I intercepted Vengeance and nearly had an unscheduled mastectomy for my troubles. Uriah then shot Vengeance three times in the head and began to upcycle to better defend himself against Vengeance. I also began to upcycle, but managed to hold off most of the change until after I had surrendered ABV into Dr. Foster’s custody for debrief and medical treatment. Pretty sure he'll be fine. At least now he's back with his family...however many are left.

Other notes:

If this guy makes it out of quarantine alive, I want him as an agent, because…hot dang.
